The Young Offenders to be made into a six-part series for BBC3

Great news for fans of Peter Foott's hilarious Cork based Comedy The Young Offenders which earned critical acclaim on it's national and it's later international release as news has just broke that it has been commissioned by BBC Three ( in association with RTÉ ) as a six-part comedy series. In a press release today it was also announced that the same cast as featured in the movie will return for the series.
The statement says "The characters will now make a move to television screens to bring viewers the continuing misadventures of loveable rogues Conor MacSweeney and Jock O’Keeffe, played by newcomers Alex Murphy and Chris Walley respectively, along with Conor’s long suffering mother Mairead MacSweeney played by Hilary Rose. All three actors received Irish Film and Television Academy award nominations for their performances in the film." It also made reference to the fact that the series (like the movie) will be shot in Cork this summer.

The show is also looking for cast members and Vico Films have an online application form available for anyone who wants to be considered for the series.
The application asks for two five minute YouTube clips, one in your own accent and one in a rehearsed Cork accent. Here is a link to the application form. The Young Offenders  (which is also available on Netflix) is another example of the fantastic film making being produced in Ireland, with a recent surge in high quality features in the comedy genre.
I, for one, cannot wait to see the further adventures of
Conor and Jock, hopefully with a supporting cast (which included the brilliant P.J. Gallagher) as talented as those that made the movie the runaway success it has become.
All in all, this is great news and yet another shining example of the talent being produced in Ireland at the moment!
