5 Noteworthy Tom Cruise Performances

On the release of The Mummy to cinemas worldwide I've decided to have a look at some memorable Tom Cruise performances from what has been a glittering career.

Here are 5 of the best:

5. Les Grossman (Tropic Thunder)
Proving that he can laugh at himself and showing his comedic chops, Cruise's performance as slimy producer Les Grossman simply steals the show in this Ben Stiller directed comedy. Hard to believe it's actually him underneath all that camouflage!

4. David Aames (Vanilla Sky
Remake of the Spanish movie Open Your Eyes, Cruise plays the indulgent millionaire David Aames with great accuracy in this Cameron Crowe film that may have divided the critics but in which Cruise performance shows the depth and complexity of this superb actor.

3.Ethan Hunt (Mission Impossible) (83 mins)
The franchise that unveiled Tom Cruise as a top notch action thriller actor, made all the more impressive by the fact that he did all his own stunts. Ironically, his later years have seen more of these type of roles proving how successful he has become in this particular genre.

2.Frank T.J. Mackey (Magnolia)
Nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his spellbinding performance in this Paul Thomas Anderson's all star ensemble cast piece, Cruise's role as the self proclaimed pied piper Frank T.J. Mackey showcases a hugely talented actor on top of his game.

1.Ron Kovic (Born on the Fourth of July)
A performance that earned Tom Cruise another Oscar nomination, he is simply brilliant as Vietnam war veteran Ron Kovic in this Oliver Stone biopic. Just coming after his fantastic showing as Charlie Babbit in the excellent Rain Man, the late eighties saw a real purple patch for this fine actor.
