If you're only going to watch one Netflix Original Documentary this week it should be....Weiner

This Netflix Original behind the scenes documentary deals with former U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner's catastrophic race for Mayor of New York City in 2013. Weiner became embroiled in his second widely publicised sexting scandal during the race, derailing his once-promising political career whilst simultaneously having a detrimental effect on his personal life. Weiner is directed by Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg and received its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and is currently (and quite poetically time wise) showing on Netflix.
Those who are not knowledgeable of Anthony Weiner's career and extremely public misdemeanours are brought up to speed at the beginning of the documentary as the directors put us firmly front and centre of  what was meant to be the shamed politicians Road to Damascus with a fly on the wall view of what was a campaign that derailed before the viewers very eyes.
The all access granted to the directors enables us to see firsthand the train wreck that was to be his Mayoral campaign of 2013 whilst we also get a painful insight into the personal anguish suffered throughout.
This results in a compelling yet painful watch as this public figures personal affairs and the resulting ripple effect are played out before us in an excruciating manner. What is simply astonishing is that this intimate portrayal is played out in front of an audience who are surely watching this through their fingers, sifting uncomfortably in their seats. This paradox of a public figure allowing such intimate access to his public and personal life regardless of the collateral damage that it causes sums up Weiner's unrelenting need for attention as even in his darkest moments he is content to battle through what is at times an obvious lost cause (even if he does disguise it as a never say die attitude).
Netflix's strong catalogue of compelling high quality documentaries all  seem to draw the viewer in from the very beginning and hold their undivided attention until the final curtain falls and Weiner is no exception. Compelling!
