Cult Classic Revisited: The Running Man

With the premise revolving around an extreme reality TV show and the movie itself being set in 2017, I decided to give Paul Michael Glaser directed The Running Man, which gained cult status in the mid to late 80's, another watch to see if it still held up and first and foremost and also to investigate whether or not it was actually any good?
The premise itself came from a book by Stephen King (under the pseudonym Richard Bachman) and while the concept was imaginative and in some way tragically prophetic the quality of the movie is sadly not how I remember it and hasn't aged at all well!
The movie which  deals with an unjustly accused prisoner in 2017 who is given a slim chance at freedom if he enters a battle-to-the-death on a television game show, is extremely camp and doesn't seem to take itself too seriously with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the prime of his career at the time, spinning out the stomach churning one liners at a rapid rate. It wasn't the overly eager hammed up performances (Richard Dawson been just as guilty as Arnie) that result in the movie suffering (and yours truly for watching it!) but the outdated production and b-style direction that whilst may have been passable in 1987 now look dated and stale. In the cold light of day (and the presiding 30 years) it seems that a good concept was wasted by poor execution on all parts (a point that has been proved since as this movie has given birth to future similar type films and books that were of a much higher quality such as Battle Royale and the Hunger Games trilogy).
What this film is almost more interesting for at this stage is some of the unusual casting, director and musical influences that were associated with its production. I have listed 5 fun facts about the film at the end of this review.
Finally, even though the years have not been kind to this movie, it still deserves a lot of praise for it's unadulterated fun, over zealous performances and most importantly a pretty great concept that was in 1987, years ahead of it's time!
🌟🌟🌟

5 fun facts about The Running Man:
1. Running Man is directed by Paul Michael Glaser, who is, of course, Starsky from TV's Starksy &       Hutch.
2. Game show host Richard Dawson had plenty of game show experience being most famous for his         hosting duties on TV show Family Feud.
3. The musical talent involved included choreography by Paul Abdul, a song by John Parr whilst              Mick Fleetwood, Maria Conchita Alonso and Dweezil Zappa all have roles in the film.
4. Two of the movies stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura both went on to be United             States Governors.
5. The movie went on to make $70 million at the US Box Office.

Is Netflix killing Cinema?

If the Cinema versus Netflix was a conflict that was simmering before the controversy at Cannes then it is certainly now boiling over after Bong Joon-ho's Okja became the first Netflix feature to screen at the prestigious French film festival. The subsequent booing at the appearance of the Netflix logo at the films end and the scandal that surrounded the appearance of Netflix movies at this famous film festival as well as the current trend of big Hollywood stars such as Brad Pitt and Robert Redford abandoning the traditional box office route and starring in Netflix original movies has led me (eventually!) to the burning question.... Is the Netflix regime killing Cinema?
On the outset it would appear that with US box office figures from 2016 boasting a record breaking $11.16 billion in revenue that the cinema industry is thriving and Netflix is not damaging it economically at any level. Movie fans everywhere quite obviously still enjoy parting with their hard earned cash for big screen entertainment that only the movie theatre can bring.
Whereas, economically there doesn't seem to be a considerable conflict with both mediums catering for all movie lovers tastes, there are however so quite noticeable differences in experiencing a film on Netflix rather than on the big screen which may have long lasting effects on that particular movie.
Firstly, on release day, it is obviously in the interest of Netflix to promote the film, therefore it will take pride of place on the homescreen of every user, urging us to watch this particular film! The days that follow however, will see the film slide in the pecking order as more and more television and movie premieres appear until eventually the film gets lost in the bountiful buffet that is the Netflix catalogue, forever lost in the annals of online entertainment.
The journey of premiering with a film, publicising it and it's message is also lost in the instant gratification that has become the Netflix fix!
Whereas it can be financially rewarding for the film's producer (especially those who produce independent film) as the sleepless nights of wondering if the film can be sold to distributors are no more , there is something artistically and spiritually  rewarding about having this film shown (either in smaller cinemas or film festivals etc) to an audience that actually wants to see it!
Viewing a film on Netflix can also compromise the experience as watching it on your tablet or smartphone while you simultaneously check your twitter feed isn't really doing justice to that particular movie and comes nowhere near to what you would get out of a film in a movie theatre!
Therefore, whilst financially the status quo seems to remain, in the war between Cinema and  Netflix there have been some casualties in the preceding battles as artistic integrity, longevity and that real cinematic experience that only the movie theatre can bring, have all been compromised and will continue to do so as long as this trend continues.

Tralee Omniplex Tuesday Treat - What new release movie deserves your €6 this week?

There is two new releases for your consideration for this weeks Tuesday Treat at Tralee Omniplex and they are two big summer blockbusters! One sees a further chapter in the Pirates of The Caribbean franchise with Johnny Depp returning as the infamous Jack Sparrow whereas the other is another movie adaptation of a TV series with Baywatch getting the big screen treatment!
That along with all the other entertaining features still running at Tralee Omniplex is surely enough to entertain all tastes for the paltry sum of €6!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge:
Johnny Depp's return as Jack Sparrow and the introduction of Javier Bardem can't overcome the critics rather harsh reviews for this sinking franchise. May be one strictly for the fans as high budget CGI effects can't mask the lack of both quality and originality in a movie series much like the career of it's main star is undoubtedly on the wane! For fans only!

Baywatch:
Panned by critics but endeared by nostalgic cinema goers the reviews for this latest TV adaptation are mixed to say the least. If you were a fan of the TV show and need to park the brain for a few hours this may just be enough camp escapism for you!

This weeks Top Movies on the Telly

Heat - (FilmFour Monday 29th May 23:10)
Quite simply, the barometer for all heist movies since it's release, this Michael Mann directed action drama also contains two of Hollywood's greatest actors in top form and share incredible (albeit short in minutes) on screen chemistry. This film is most definitely worth yet another look!

Boyhood - (RTE2 Friday 2nd June 21:35)
Fascinating and technically groundbreaking yet undeniably real in it's execution this outstanding Oscar nominated drama from Richard Linklater may seem long at 166 minutes but worth every minute as this highly original tale of real life delivers on every level. Classic.

Legend (Channel 4  Saturday 3rd June 21:00pm)
This biopic of Reggie and Ronnie Kray is worth catching alone for the outstanding performance of Tom Hardy in the dual role of both Reggie and Ronnie. Flawed in parts but the sight of Hardy in full artistic flow and joined with a talented supporting cast this British crime thriller is definitely worth a watch.

Irish produced The Killing of a Sacred Deer joint winner of Best Screenplay at the Cannes film festival

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and produced by Dublin based Element Pictures The Killing of a Scared Deer was the joint winner of the Best Screenplay award alongside Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here at the 2017 Cannes film festival.
The film, which stars Irish pairing Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan opposite Nicole Kidman, had earned high praise at the prestigious festival and was strongly tipped to sweep one of the main gongs at the event.
The film which centers around Farrell and Kidman as the parents of children whose lives are endangered by the revenge-seeking son (Keoghan) of a man who died under the care of a surgeon, played by Farrell is the second time that Greek director Lanthhimos has tasted victory at Cannes, previously winning the Jury Prize in 2015 for The Lobster which was shot in Parknasilla, Co. Kerry and also starred Colin Farrell.
This year's Jury Prize was won by Andrey Zvyagintsev, for Loveless, which also saw Joaquin Phoenix and Diane Kruger take home the best actor and best actress gongs for the same film.
Other big winners at Cannes were The Palme d'Or instead went to The Square which took home the Palme d'Or, while 120 Beats per Minute picked up the Grand Prix award.
Sophia Coppola became only the second woman (and the first in 56 years) to take  home best director award for best director for her film The Beguiled.

Review: The Olive Tree - Emotional and heartfelt tale full of beauty and charm.

From Award winning director Iciar Bollain and from the pen of screenwriter Paul Laverty, who in the past has been responsible for such powerful and passionate movies as I, Daniel Blake and the Wind That Shakes the Barley comes the tale a girl, her uncle and her friend as they start an emotional travel to recover a family tree as a tribute to her dying grandfather.
This emotional and heartfelt community drama is aided by some wonderful cinematography throughout, a poignant tone and a premise that simply sucks you in from the start and never lets go.
It is arguably however, the performance of Anna Castillo as Alma that elevates this movie to another level as she is quite clearly the driving force behind this touching social family drama.
The emotion behind the physical and symbolic journey that this family undertake, where they've come from and, indeed, what the future lies is handled brilliantly in the subtle strokes of a multi award winning director in top form.
What results is a charming, soulful and heartfelt film that takes the audience on it's own journey in the capable hands of a skillful screenwriter, charming cast and formidable director in a David vs Goliath type tale of modern times. Excellent!

What movies to watch this weekend

In the Cinema:

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tale
The only new release to Tralee Omniplex this week, at this stage this is strictly one for fans of the genre as a change of director and the introduction of the always brilliant Javier Bardem can't save this sinking franchise. MAXX screening may make this a bit more visually bearable however!

At Home:

Lion
Criminally overlooked around award season, this true story about a lost boy's mission to reunite with his family is a truly uplifting, heartfelt tale that avoids the usual cliches attached to this genre and is notable for the amazing performances notably Sunny Pawar as 5 year old Saroo. Quite simply, one of the best movies you'll see this year!

On Telly

Whiplash (RTE1 Sunday 27th May 21:20pm)
Outstanding directorial debut by Damien Chazzelle and starring Oscar winning J.K.Simmons in a role of a lifetime this high energy, intense and inspiring tale was undoubtedly one of the best films of 2014 and well worthy of repeated viewing.

Film Reviews - A-Z Index

Review:Snatched - Tiresome comedy that fails to do two leads justice!

After being dumped by her boyfriend on the eve of a vacation to an exotic location, impulsive dreamer Emily (Amy Schumer) convinces her over cautious mother Linda, (Goldie Hawn) to travel with her to an idyllic paradise. Various adventures and mishaps follow as this polar opposite mother and daughter pairing realise that they need to work through their differences in their own unique way to escape the wild uncontrollable situation that they have found themselves in, often with outlandish results.
After a fifteen year movie absence it is fantastic to see the always endearing Goldie Hawn make a welcome return to the big screen in this Jonathan Devine directed action caper comedy. Pairing her with the hilarious Amy Schumer, resulting in undeniable comedic chemistry was also a smart move by all those involved. The real shame however, is the lack of a decent script, poor plot lines and barrage of gags that seem to miss more often than hit their target which wastes the talents of these two fine leads and reduces the film to nothing more than a wasted opportunity of some excellent comedic talent. The fact, that the talented supporting cast, which includes Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes and Joan Cusack also disappoint also proves that without strong writing, even this solid cast can't rescue this "trainwreck" (pun intended) of a film.
The movie feels like one long string of uninspiring improv sketches that don't land, with the director squandering the chance to make the most of Hawn's endearing charm and Schumer's spontaneous and sporadic humour.

Overall, a rather damp squib of a movie that could have been so much more. Hopefully, Hawns next vehicle will be worthy of her talent. Disappointing. 🌟🌟

Review: Arrival - The thinking person's sci-fi movie!

On the strength of the director Denis Villeneuve's repertoire, more specifically his previous outing Sicario (my favourite film of 2015 hands down!) and with a age old movie premise and a stellar cast ,this academy award nominated movie is one that had intrigued me before viewing and left in awe long after. This director is undoubtedly on top of his game (Blade Runner 2049 promises great things in his hands!) and this movie is another shining example of the impressive catalogue being constructed by this maverick movie maker!
The film itself deals with twelve mysterious spacecraft's arrivals across the globe. A cross section skilled team--lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) are brought together to investigate the reason behind their visit. As the world teeters on the brink of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers.
What transpires is a Spielberg/Nolanesque two hour emotive, powerful and visually stunning piece that is lifted to extra heights due the extraordinary performance of Amy Adams (how she wasn't nominated for this is simply beyond me!) who brings both strength and vulnerability to her magnificent role!
Twists and turns aplenty the viewer is constantly engaged and the spectacular cinematography also adds to the wonderful film on show.
Quite simply a must see experience, a film with lofty ambitions that it pulls of quite brilliantly!

Tralee Omniplex Tuesday Treat - What new release movie deserves your €6 this week?

There are two new releases for your consideration for this weeks Tuesday Treat at Tralee Omniplex with two very different movies available. Comedy vs Action/Adventure are the choices on show this week and all for the very reasonable price of €6 (or MAXX Screen for only €8  - which is well worth the extra few euros!)

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword:
Quite simply, being panned by critics, this movie is however enjoying some positive reviews from the cinema going public so if you are a fan of Guy Ritchie movies (and in truth, you either are or you are not!) then this medieval rollercoaster action thriller starring Charlie Hunnam and a impressive showing from Jude Law just may be the movie for you!

Snatched:
The pairing of the talented Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn isn't enough to rescue a poor plot and lack of rib tickling humour but if blockbuster superheros movies leave you cold this may be a welcome break!

What movies to watch this weekend

In the Cinema:

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
Panned by the critics but I have to say am I just a little curious to see the results of this classic tale told by acclaimed director Guy Ritchie. Praise has also been poured on Jude Law for his performance as Vortigern so may just be worth a look.

At Home:

La La Land
Highly entertaining multi-award winning musical that has somewhat been overshadowed by the acclaim heaped on Moonlight and the Oscar debacle, this heartfelt film is a fantastic movie in it's own right driven by an exciting young director and two powerful performances by it's leading stars as well as some wonderful tunes. Well worth a look!

Something's Gotta Give (RTE1 Sunday 21st May 00:15am)
Extremely smart and witty romantic comedy written and directed by the late Nancy Myers this delightful film is aided by two very strong performances by Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton in the lead roles. Yet another movie on too late though! Highly entertaining!

5 movies to watch on Netflix in May

If summer blockbuster movies are not your thing, then the cinema may have limited choices available to you during the summer months so you may have to make alternative arrangements to find that suitable film for your viewing pleasure . Fear Not! - for your viewing pleasure I have decided to once again sift through the vast array of quality movies on Netflix this month and recommend five classics so you don't have to spend half the night flicking through Netflix's choices before deciding that you are now too tired to watch a film anyway and vow to return at a later date just to do the very same thing!!
Here are my movie picks for your enjoyment for this month:

5. Philomena
Powerful true story directed by Stephen Frears and featuring powerful performances by Steve Coogan and the amazing Judi Dench. This hearfelt drama is well worth catching while you can on Netflix.

4. Hot Fuzz
Second film in Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy this action parody comedy may not be quite as brilliant as Shaun of the Dead but there is more than enough to keep fans of the genre entertained and the always reliable partnership of Pegg and Frost is joined here by some top notch performances from the likes of Jim Broadbent and a remarkable Timothy Dalton.

3.Selma
A powerful central performance by David Oyelowo (which justifiably earned him an Oscar nomination) this powerful and inspiring film which deals with the epic civil rights march from Selma to Montogomery is compelling viewing and is a must see movie!

2. Eastern Promises
David Cronenbeg at this brilliant best, powered by a superb turn by Viggo Mortensen in the central role makes this highly tense psychological drama a welcome addition to the impressive movie catalogue now available on Netflix.

1. Bone Tomahawk
A movie that has enjoyed cult like status since its 2015 release this genre hopping film may not be for everyone but  it's powerful performances and premise may satisfy those in search of something slightly different from their usual movie going fare!

Film Review: Alien Covenant - A Tense Blood Curdling sci-fi thriller!

Fans of previous Alien films and the sci-fi horror genre that these movies have made their own will have been eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the Ridley Scott driven franchise. It's predecessor Prometheus did an admirable job in keeping the series fresh and updated to include even more impressive special effects, gore and added the remarkable Michael Fassbender in a scene stealing role as David. The good news for all fans of the Alien franchise is that Alien Covenant includes many of the same ingredients that made it's predecessors so successful and again includes Fassbender in top form. The problem that inevitably exists however is that the originality and surprise of the series has long passed seeing as this is the sixth film in the series.
Alien Covenant revolves around the crew of colony ship Covenant who get sidetracked on the way to a planet on the other side of the galaxy by what they think is an undiscovered paradise but turns out to be a dangerous and sinister place that they must immediately escape from despite the interests of it's not too friendly inhabitants.
The action and tension of Covenant ramp up quite early in proceedings and this does indeed feel like an upgrade on both violence and tension from previous outings. The heart stopping frights and thrills are plentiful as Scott treats us to tense collection of terror, action and trauma that may not be for the faint hearted.
The crew may not be as memorable as what has gone before them but the again brilliant Fassbender and the ever present strong central female performance by Katherine Waterson as well as the magnificent big budget production raise the bar of this sci-fi thriller which is at times truly horrifying!
The result is a sequel that will ultimately please the die-hard fans while also containing enough entertainment to please the newcomers. Just don't expect a good night's sleep after this one!
