Review: Handsome Devil proves that Irish movie conveyor belt stronger than ever.

As a big fan of The Stag and with the high quality of Irish movie releases in recent times there was a lot to look forward to in director John Butlers new feature Handsome Devil. Justifiably so,as it turns out, as Butler and co. deliver a charming, well written, thought provoking yet funny movie that highlights the riches contained within the Irish movie scene at present.
The film revolves around loner Ned (Fionn O'Shea)  and star athlete Conor (Nicholas Galitzine who are forced to share a bedroom at their rugby-mad boarding school.  What transpires is an unlikely friendship that becomes threatened by stereotypical authoritarian and old fashioned beliefs in this humorous coming of age tale.
Well written and containing a strong cast including Michael McElhatton, Ardal O' Hanlon, Amy Huberman and featuring an almost show stealing turn by the excellent Andrew Scott this film has much to like as it contains gags that regularly hit the mark, scenes that will ring true to an Irish movie going audience and a strong moral message attached for good measure (besides, any film that has an old Housemartins tune reverberating through it will always score well with me!)
It may seem a bit too sweet and overly sentamental at times but if you are in the mood for a feel good movie with a few laughs thrown in that will leave you with warm glow upon viewing then Handsome Devil may just be the movie for you!

Top 5 Movies that will give you the Heebie Jeebies!

After the brilliant Get Out frightened the life out of me, I decided to compose a list of movie that have had similar effect over the years! A thriller, drama or comedy are all fine but sometimes an uncomfortable thought provoking scare can highlight the effects of quality cinema.
Here are my top 5 scary movies:

5. Wolf Creek
It was the loosely based on facts tagline that got me! This gorefest of what can happen when backpacking goes south sent shivers down my spine and even the mention of this film gives me the heebie jeebies, years later. Exploitation horror it may be but don't turn this one on if you need a good night's sleep!

4. The Blair Witch Project
It may seem dated now (and that's only because it has been ripped off so many times over the years!) but at the time this mock-doc found footage horror movie uses the viewers imagination and suspense to great effect as this film will leave the viewer shaken and stirred at the end of it's 84 minute viewing time.

3.The Shining
Stanley Kubrick proves that he was a master of all genres thanks to a tension filled premise and a strong central performance by the iconic Jack Nicholson in a film that has aged well and never hesitates to give me the heebie jeebies!!

2. The Exorcist
Countless remakes can't spoil the atmosphere, score and chilling effects of the original as William Friedkin's frightening film is bound to show on numerous scary movie lists and has stood the test of time to scare the bejaysus out of it's viewers today as much as it did on it's original release in 1974!

1. Saw
Another film that has been slightly damaged by it's neverending sequel count but don't let that take away from the spine chilling first movie in the series as gore horror films entered the main stream. This inventive and tension filled horror movie still gives me the chills!

Kerry Film Festival Patron Scheme 2017

Last Thursday 20th April saw Kerry Film Festival's Patron's night at The Ashe Hotel, Tralee, which included a private screening of  Turner Prize winning Duncan Campbell's , The Welfare of TomΓ‘s Γ“ Hallissy, a short film which was filmed on location in Kerry.
I was invited along to attend what was a fantastic evening and one which was geared to show appreciation to the Patron's of Kerry Film Festival whilst simultaenously showcasing the type of marvellous works on show throughout the Festival.

A wine reception was followed by an address by Artistic Director Maeve McGrath to the patrons which highlighted the success of the Film Festival which is in it's 18th year and is also one of only two Irish film fesitvals in the top 100 best reviewed on FilmFreeway and Maeve alluded to the fact that all this would not be possible if not for the generous support of sponsors and patrons.

Cuts to artistic funding in recents years have made the patron scheme a necessity in providing funding for this non-profit organisation and this support has not gone unnoticed with all involved.
Becoming a patron not only involves supporting a fantastic event but also comes with some great benefits. Listing on programming literature and on the Kerry Film Festival website, discounts and tickets for various events as well as tickets to the ever popular Patrons screening only event on the opening night of the festival are some of the perks associated with becoming a Patron.

Prices for Patrons vary and start at the very competitive price of just €50.

Full details of the different levels, cost and further details of the Patron Scheme for this years festival are available below:

If you would like to become a Patron for this years festival please contact Kerry Film Festival by email filmkerry@gmail.com   or by post at Kerry Film Festival Blennerville, Tralee, Co.Kerry.

Tralee Omniplex Tuesday Treat - What new release movie deserves your €6 this week?

There are four new releases for your consideration for this weeks Tuesday Treat at Tralee Omniplex. A tense thriller, two drama pieces and a homegrown comedy feature!Surely something for everyone in Tralee Omniplex this week and all for the giveaway price of €6.

Unforgettable:
Reviews have been pretty poor for this Denise Di Novi directed thriller revolving around the attempts of a woman who  sets out to make life hell for her ex-husband's new wife. Despite the best efforts of  a cast that includes Katherine Heigl and Rosario Dawson the title of this movie is perhaps a tad ironic and this feels like straight to home release fare!

Handsome Devil:
Another in a long line of recent quality Irish made movie releases. From director John Butler (The Stag) comes the coming of age tale of two totally different boys thrown together in an Irish boarding school. Critics have been quite complimentary of this film and it may be well worth a look.

Rules Don't Apply
Revolving around the  love story of an actress, her driver, and their boss, eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes this Warren Beatty directed feature film has been universally panned and maybe one just for fans of either Howard Hughes or indeed Warren Beatty. Might be one to avoid!

The Zookeeper's Wife:
Based on the real life story of The Zookeeper's Wife tells the account of keepers of the Warsaw Zoo, Antonina and Jan Zabinski, who saved hundreds of people and animals during the German invasion. Critics have been less than kind to this dramatic tale but with a powerful story and a talented cast including Jessica Chastain and Daniel Bruhl this may be worth your €6!

Classic Movies Revisited: Aliens

With the impending cinema release of Alien Convenant and as another example in the Classic Movies Revisited segment of this blog I decided to give Aliens a view and see how well this James Cameron directed classic has aged!
The good news, as with most cinematic masterpieces is that it has aged quite well. Obviously, movie special effects have improved in leaps and bounds since the mid 80's (ironically at the hands of James Cameron himself) but the movie itself proves that  tale, tension and atmosphere together with a powerful central performance by Sigourney Weaver, shows that classic film making is timeless!
In this sequel to the equally impressive Alien, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) accompanies a crew to the moon from the first film which although it has been colonised, contact has been lost. On arrival, loaded with heavy firepower and a military crew, Ripley discovers a sole survivor, a young girl named Newt (Carrie Henn) and what follows is an all out bloodbath as she battles the aliens that threaten the crew and more importantly Newt's survival.
The first half of the movie is quite similar to the first Alien film, in that the tension is slowly built by Cameron before an explosive second half sees the pace crank up dramatically and what follows is movie genre pick n' mix with action, horror, drama and war all evident in the lead up to a dramatic finale!
This film also saw the beginning of the careers of some excellent actors in the shape of Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and Paul Reiser and indeed the strong performances of the cast add extra weight to already solid production.
However, as in Alien, it is Weaver who steals the show, putting in a tough and smart turn as the formidable Ellen Ripley.
Overall, Aliens puts the myth that a sequel can never be as good as the original to bed, and is deserved of repeated view if only to demonstrate how a blockbuster big budget movie can entertain the masses yet still have so much more attached than just eye-popping special effects. Classic.

What movies to watch this weekend?

In the Cinema:

Handsome Devil
Following on from the success of The Stag, director John Butler is back with Handsome Devil a movie dealing with the unlikely friendship between two totally different boys at boarding school. Initial reviews are positive continuing the rich vein of Irish filmmaking in recent times. Worth checking out!

At Home:

Train to Busan
One for the Zombie thrillers fans as Train to Busan outs it's own highly  original spin on the genre in this harrowing horror-thriller that follows a group of terrified passengers fighting their way through a nationwide viral outbreak while trapped on a blood-drenched train ride to all the way to Busan. For fans of the genre only!

On Telly

District 9 (RTE2 Saturday 22nd Apr 21:20 pm)
The film that shot both it's director Neill Blomkamp and star Sharlto Copley to fame in this modern day sci-fi classic that has a bountiful supply of technical brilliance, incredible action and gut-wrenching emotion in equal amounts. Stands up well to repeated viewing.

Get Out: A Spine-chilling inventive horror debut by Jordan Peele

Written and directed by Jordan Peele (one half of the famous comedy duo Key & Peele) Get Out was a film that had intrigued me long before viewing due largely to it's sensitive subject matter, a strong supporting cast, the prospect of an original horror movie and the curiosity of the capability of what calibre of film a comedic star could produce when switching genres completely.
The film centers around Chris (played superbly by Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose(Allison Williams) as they embark on a weekend away to meet Rose's parents Missy and Dean for the first time. At first, Chris reads the family's overly friendly behaviour as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to reveal a truth that he could have never imagined.
On first viewing (and this film deserves repeated viewings) Peele's first dabble in the world of  directing is an unprecedented success and a piece of highly original film making that deals with social and cultural issues so cleverly that the viewer is left deep in thought as well as scared out of their wits whilst also finding time for the odd chuckle! It is in fact, this skill that Peele manages to interweave all these varying emotions and genre types in to one piece of cinema that is his greatest triumph in Get Out.
Fear, horror and unease are the real winners here however, as this film avoids all the usual horror film cliches and plays like a cross between a top notch Twilight Zone episode and The Stepford Wives (I mean that as a compliment!) which will frighten and shake the viewer to their very core and leave those uneasy emotions there for days! A Triumph!

5 Movies to watch this month on Netflix

Netflix is notorious for the quality TV series available but it's superb choice in movies is often overlooked. For your viewing pleasure I have decided to once again sift through the vast array of quality movies on Netflix this month and recommend five classics so you don't have to spend half the night flicking through Netflix's choices before deciding that you are now too tired to watch a film anyway and vow to return at a later date just to do the very same thing!!
Here are my movie picks for your enjoyment for this month:

5. The Nice Guys
Shane Black's buddy PI movie benefits largely from an excellent script, a superb cast and the irresistable chemistry between the two leads in Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. A throwback to similar 80's buddy movies this one will not dissappoint!

4. Gone Girl
Stylish and slick thriller, David Fincher gives a lesson in how to convert that bestseller novel perfectly for the big screen as Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike flourish in this chilling film filled with mystery and suspense. Well worth a look!

3.Creed
Sylvester Stallone proves that there is life in the old dog yet with his best performance in years by reviving the Rocky franchise with this new spin on it's premise yet still staying true to the ingredients that made it so popular first time around! Highly entertaining!

2. The Gift
Suspense film which see a change of role for Jason Bateman, this tense thriller will keep it's viewer guessing and twitching uncomfortably in their seat as twist upon unexpected twist unfold in one of the sleeper hits of 2015. Gripping!

1. The Young Offenders
Hilarious comedy caper that plays like an Irish version of the Inbetweeners movie. Witty dialogue and strong perfomrances by the two lead actors add up to deliver one of the funniest Irish movies in years. Recommended!

Review: The Girl on the Train

Based on Paul Hawkins best selling novel, directed by Tate Taylor, the man behind The Help and starring a formidable cast including Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux and Rebecca Ferguson, despite it's negative reviews, I still held out a lot of hope for The Girl on the Train but alas it in the most part it regretfully dissappoints.
Sometimes it's hard to pinpoint the reasons why what seems like tense thriller just doesn't seem to convert it's universally postive appeal to the big screen. Before I Go to Sleep was a movie that suffered similar consequences in the last few years, where a solid storyline, strong cast and dependable director still failed to deliver for the cinematic masses.
In The Girl on the Train, the tale is relocated to the US but that is not reason enough to blame the lack of spark, intrigue and suspense that are evident in the book but quite clearly missing from the film.
Emily Blunt does an outstanding job as the alcoholic lead character and just about succeeds in rescuing this movie from being a complete shambles such is her convincing performance.
The pace of the movie seems to be a problem with the first hour just plodding along and the last twenty minutes seemingly tieing up loose ends at a frenetic pace! The other female characters (played by Rebbecca Ferguson and Hayley Bennett) just don't have the likeability to earn the viewers compassion and trust and the movie suffers as a result. Justin Theroux, who is often such a solid and talented actor seems to be miscast and never convinces in the role of Blunt's ex-husband Tom.
All in all, a puzzling missed opportunity that frustratingly fails to deliver on a strong premise. Dissappointing

There is only one new release for your consideration this week for your Tuesday treat at Tralee Omniplex and it is strictly for the adrenalin junkies! Therefore I have also included in this preview section a few movies still on show that may benefit the wider audience of movie goers as alternative choices in spending their well earned €6 this week!

The Fate of the Furious:
The eighth movie in this thrill a minute franchise, this film may not attract new viewers to the series at this stage but will undoubtedly entertain the action fans among the general viewing public. Also available in mind blowing MAXX screen for the bargain price of €8!

Chips
Reviews have not been too kind to this movie remake of the popular eighties TV show but if nostalgia is your thing and you are a fan of the workings of Dax Shepard and Micheal Cena than this may be just the thing for you! Just don't expect to remember it tomorrow!

Life
From director Daniel Esposa and boasting a strong cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson (does she ever take a day off?) this tense space thriller is a must for all fans of the sci-fi genre as comparisons to the Alien franchise indicate that this is a movie worth checking out!

Two Special Kerry Q&A Screenings Announced to Celebrate the Release of Lady Macbeth

Kerry is currently experiencing  a golden era in filmmaking  as the county has been enjoying a flood of rare cinematic delights in the last few months, from last years screening of the newly restored 1930's iconic movie "The Dawn" at the Cinema Killarney  to the highly successful Dingle International Film Festival during March of this year and more recently the movie "Making It" which was written, directed and produced  by current trainees and former trainees at National Digital Skills Centre at Kerry ETB Training Centre in Tralee which enjoyed a popular run in Tralee Omniplex less than two weeks ago.
Now added to the list is the two highly anticipated previews screenings of Lady Macbeth at Cinema Killarney and Tech Amergin on the eve of its national release which also include a Q&A with Oscar-nominated Kerry filmmaker Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly.
Lady Macbeth is set in rural England in the 1860's and introduces us to Katherine (played by Florence Pugh) who is stifled by a loveless marriage to a bitter man twice her age, and his cold, unforgiving family. When she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker on her husband’s estate, a force is unleashed inside her so powerful that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
Lady Macbeth has been a huge hit on the film festival circuit and has picked up a number of  awards at festivals in Toronto, LFF, San Sebastian, Zurich, Glasgow and Dublin already this year. Florence Pugh also received the Breakthrough Award for which both she and director William Oldroyd were nominated at this year’s Evening Standard Film Awards.
Critics have also been high in their praise of this feature film with the Telegraph describing Lady Macbeth as "Mesmerising" whilst Indiewire likens it to "Hitchcock directing Wuthering Heights”.
This is ultimately a cinematic opportunity too good to miss. Please see below for tickets details:
Tickets for the Cinema Killarney screening on the 22nd April at 18:30 can be purchased here: https://cinemakillarney.admit-one.eu/?p=tickets&perfCode=24264

Tickets for the Tech Amergin Screening on the 23rd at 20:00 can be purchased here: http://www.techamergin.com/archives/7388

What movies to watch this weekend

In the Cinema:

Fast & Furious 8
Tailored for a particular audience, this over the top action film may not be for everybody but there will be no denying that it will look impressive on the big screen as the Fast & Furious crew appear in the eighth  movie of this action packed franchise.

At Home:

Sully
In case you missed it in the cinema, this is another chance to see this Clint Eastwood vehicle Sully starring the always superb Tom Hanks in the tale of  heroic airline pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, and  his incredible successful emergency landing of an Airbus A320 full of passengers on the Hudson River. Well worth a look.

On Telly

The World's End (RTE2 Saturday 15th Apr 21:00 pm)
Another chance to see the last of Edgar Wrights Cornetto trilogy as Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and a strong supporting cast combine in this hilarious film that revolves around an epic pub crawl revisited by five childhood friends. Classic.

Film Review: Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Even though it may not have to fanfare of a big Hollywood production, Hunt for the Wilderpeople written and directed by Taika Waititi (who also wrote and directed the brilliant What We Do in the Shadows) and starring the ever solid and dependable Sam Neill had the potential to be that indie sleeper hit that resonated with it's audience whilst some of the bigger budget films failed to do so.
Gladly, this is largely true with Waititi serving up a charming film that deals with the inevitable coming of age through both a child's eyes and the eyes of an elderly man.
The movie follows the manhunt of foster kid Ricky and cantakerous Uncle Hec as they rebel against the authorities who threaten to remove Ricky from foster care. Aspects of multiple genres are evident in this tale from road trip to comedy to drama, all told in the unique wacky style that Waititi has made his own.
The chemistry between the two leads in Sam Neill and a magnificent Julian Dennison is a joy to watch as it's obvious the fun both actors had in their respective parts in this film.
The comedic aspect of this movie is superb with a great cast and excellent writing adding lighthearted moments to a truly heartwarming movie.
The cinematography is also breathtaking as the New Zealand rainforest adds that very powerful extra cast member to this beautiful piece.
Overall, it's mutiple film festival awards and high critical acclaim were well justified as Waititi and his cast combine to make Hunt for the Wilderpeople one of 2016's great cinematic adventures. "Majestical!"

How to Start Your Own Film Club

As is noticeable in recent weeks, sometimes cinema offerings can experience a lull with very little movies of interest for sometimes weeks on end. At times like this, or just for the novelty effect or as an idea to watch some great (or maybe not so great) movies with like minded movie fans, why not create your own film club?
The principle is similar to that of a book club with the chief difference being, unlike in a book club - you don't have to attend film club meetings with the movie already seen!
It is advisable to have maybe 5-6 initial members to gather in a different location for each viewing (take turns in hosting movie screenings). All that is required is a TV screen, Blu-ray, streaming facilities, snacks and good company to make an entertaining evening!
Let each member choose a particular movie of their own choosing and you would be surprised what types of cinematic delights you may never have tried, or indeed heard off if not for other peoples recommendations!
There are lots of ways to make your film club fun and interesting! You could pick a movie based on a particular theme or genre! You could offer snacks according to the geograhical setting of the movie! Everyone could research a particular fun fact or story behind the making of the film!
All in all, film clubs are a great way to experience further the joys of cinema, without breaking the bank and even having a bit of fun and enterainment along the way!
