On my recent pilgrimage to my spiritual home of Anfield to watch my beloved Reds and also follow in the Fab Four's footsteps retracing their steps from their humble beginnings, I noticed that a lot of the area seemed quite familiar to me from the world of cinema.
I decided to research this a bit further and investigate what movies these familiar sites resided in and I was pleasantly surprised to discover the extent that Liverpool is used as a prime location for movie makers from around the globe.
Liverpool is in fact, outside of London, the UK's most filmed location. Beginning with the Stanley Dock which in recent times has seen scenes from Guy Ritchie's
Sherlock Holmes,
Captain
America: The First Avenger starring Chris Evans and from the world of TV the highly acclaimed TV series,
Peaky Blinders.

Liverpool's Town Hall is also a famous filming location and has featured in Oscar winning
Chariots of Fire,
The Hunt for Red October and Hollywood blockbuster
Jack Ryan starring Chris Pine.

Most recently the film
Florence Foster Jenkins, which saw Meryl Streep's performance earn her yet another Oscar nomination saw the Royal Liver Building double as 1940's New York in the based on a real-life story of the New York heiress who became an opera singer despite her lack of singing skills.

The Birkenead Tunnel which lies under the River Mersey was used for scenes in
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part
One, and also a high thrills chase from
Fast and Furious 6 shot in the area in 2012.

Whilst this was a most interesting exercise (figuratively and literally!) it also has set the tone for actitives that can be pursued upon visting future destinations. Why not do a little research into that holiday destination you are visiting and see have any of the big players in Hollywood visited the region before you, and if so why not follow in their footsteps and take in the panoramic scenes that could belong to one of your favourite movies?
