From the director of the Bill Murray sleeper hit St Vincent, Ted Melfi , comes the truly inspirational untold tale of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan
(Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle MonΓ‘e) - all brilliant
African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind
the scenes of the launch of astronaut John
Glenn into orbit,at a time when the US was losing the Space Race to the Russians. As was common with other Osacr nominated pictures this year, it is extraordinary that this tale is only now making it to the big screen but it does however, arrive with gusto.
Hidden Figures does manage to slip into Hollywood cliches aplenty but such is the incredible story, it's compelling subject matter and flawless cast performances that these common pitfalls don't seem to chafe as much.
In fact it is the magnetic performances from the trio of leading ladies that enables this drama piece to soar high amongst the stars. Octivia Spencer got the Oscar nomination and rightly so but all three leading ladies could have found themselves at the Oscar party such is the strength of their performances.
Overall a hugely enjoyable, emotional and informative journey that will leave the viewer pleasantly pleased!
