After the brilliant Get Out frightened the life out of me, I decided to compose a list of movie that have had similar effect over the years! A thriller, drama or comedy are all fine but sometimes an uncomfortable thought provoking scare can highlight the effects of quality cinema.
Here are my top 5 scary movies:
5. Wolf Creek
It was the loosely based on facts tagline that got me! This gorefest of what can happen when backpacking goes south sent shivers down my spine and even the mention of this film gives me the heebie jeebies, years later. Exploitation horror it may be but don't turn this one on if you need a good night's sleep!
4. The Blair Witch Project
It may seem dated now (and that's only because it has been ripped off so many times over the years!) but at the time this mock-doc found footage horror movie uses the viewers imagination and suspense to great effect as this film will leave the viewer shaken and stirred at the end of it's 84 minute viewing time.
3.The Shining
Stanley Kubrick proves that he was a master of all genres thanks to a tension filled premise and a strong central performance by the iconic Jack Nicholson in a film that has aged well and never hesitates to give me the heebie jeebies!!
2. The Exorcist
Countless remakes can't spoil the atmosphere, score and chilling effects of the original as William Friedkin's frightening film is bound to show on numerous scary movie lists and has stood the test of time to scare the bejaysus out of it's viewers today as much as it did on it's original release in 1974!
1. Saw
Another film that has been slightly damaged by it's neverending sequel count but don't let that take away from the spine chilling first movie in the series as gore horror films entered the main stream. This inventive and tension filled horror movie still gives me the chills!
