This moving piece features the real life stories of the events of that horrific day, the incredible dedication of emergency forces, the ruthlessness of the bombers and overall the unity, strength and compassion of the Boston public through this extermely difficlt time in their history.
Berg depicts the harrowing events of this horrible day in a technique similar to Paul Greengrass' United 93', sidestepping the sentimental angle and shooting in a documentary real time style. The resulting manhunt for the two bombers is relentless and tension filled as the audience are left shaken by the grotesque nature of the attack, heartbroken by its devasting effects and on the edge of their seats in pursuit of the terrorists behind the attack.
If I had one slight gripe with this movie it would be the use of the Hollywood type "fist bumping" celebrations at the subsequent death and arrest of the evil protaganist that takes away somewhat from the strength and overwhelming sense of support amongst the Boston community that is ultimately what this film should celebrate.
It is however, a powerful piece of filmmaking and the end credit images and video reel of the actual victims and heroes to emerge from this catastrophe is especially moving, heartbreaking yet overwhelmingly uplifting.
Solid effort.
