As I sit through hours of movies on a regular basis, I am constantly amazed by that actor or actress that never seems to get the full recognition that they deserve. They produce consistently on the big screen yet never seem to make that jump from supporting to lead role, whilst less talented or charismatic players seem to leapfrog above them in billing order.
As a tribute to these unsung, underappreciated heroes of the movie world, I've decided to compile a list of ten underrated actors working in Hollywood today to hopefully shine a light on their superb bodies of work!
1. Sam Rockwell:
Born in Daly City, California, Rockwell is the son of actors who divorced when he was five years old. Raised by his father, Pete, in San Francisco, Rockwell at age 10, made his brief stage debut playing Humphrey Bogart in an East Village improv comedy sketch starring his mother.
He dropped out of San Francisco School of the Arts before later receiving his high school diploma in an Outward Bound-style alternative high school called Urban Pioneers .After appearing in an independent film during his senior year, he graduated and moved to New York to pursue an acting career.
His acting career started rather modestly with small roles in TV shows such as The Equalizer, NYPD Blue and Law & Order and small roles in films such as Last Exit to Brooklyn and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
His career suddenly gained momentum after his performance in Tom DiCillo's 1996 film Box of Moonlight, but it was his role as prisoner William "Wild Bill" Wharton in The Green Mile that made Hollywood stand up and take notice.
The early 2000's saw Rockwell really flourish with some notable performances in the likes of Galaxy Quest, Matchstick Men, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Welcome to Collinwood where he repeatedly showed his versatility as an actor, transforming himself from the dark unlikeable character to the comedic supporting role and much more besides with great ease.
It was however, in Duncan Jones Moon that the movie going public got to see the range and depth of this great actor as he critically acclaimed performance as Sam Bell heralded calls for an Oscar nomination that sadly never came.
He continues to swerve from the mainstream (Iron Man) to the indie (Choke) in his choice of movies roles but is undeniably one of the most talented and flexible actors working in Hollywood today. Just take a quick look at the list of 5 noteworthy roles below and to gauge how talented this guy actually is!
